Iskele District was affiliated to Famagusta district until 1998. With a law enacted in 2000, it gained district status together with the town of Güzelyurt. The name of the area, which was known as Trikoma before 1974, was changed to Yeni Iskele, especially after the settlement of Turkish Cypriots from the Iskele village of Larnaca. Located on the Famagusta-Karpaz road and known as “Bogazé”, the region is the center of attention of tourists with its many touristic facilities and fish restaurants. The Haravdi beach on the Bosphorus is used as a public beach. Iskele is the largest settlement between Famagusta and Karpaz. The region where villages such as Bafra, Mehmetçik, Dipkarpaz and Yeni Erenköy are located is also home to the Karpaz donkeys, which are the symbol of Cyprus. This region, which has untouched beaches such as Bafra and Altınkumsal, attracts those who seek peace and tranquility with its natural and historical beauties. As of June 1, 1998, the number of districts was increased from 3 to 5 and was declared as İskele District. There are 43 settlements in the Iskele District. The population of the district is 20,245.
