It is believed that it was founded in the 11th century BC, by Tefkros, who left the island of Salamis after the Trojan War. After the Greek protection, the Assyrians followed by Persians had conquered the city which finally with the death of Alexander the Great the city suffered many damages.
During the Roman Empire, the importance of Salamis city increased after the island passed under Roman rule. Although many parts of this ancient city are yet to be discovered, the Roman baths, gymnasium and theater, have been discovered, it is one of the most favored touristic spots and also hosts many concerts during the summer months.
